Umaid Bhawan Palace: A Brief History and the Reasons to Visit

There’s no doubt that India has some of the most beautiful reasons to visit, most notably its architecture. There’s the Taj Mahal, the Lake Palace, The Konark Sun Temple, the more modern Infosys Pune, the Victoria Memorial, and so many more, but have you ever heard of the Umaid Bhawan Palace.

It’s still nothing short of glorious and a fantastic place to visit on your next India trip, one of the lesser-known palaces throughout India. To wet your whistle, today we’re going to dive into a brief history of the palace and highlight some of the best reasons why you’re going to want to visit this place for yourself.

A Brief History of Umaid Bhawan Palace

The Umaid Bhawan can be found in Jodhpur, in the Rajasthan area of India. The palace is one of the largest private residences in the entire world and is managed by the organization known as Taj Hotels. No points awarded for guessing what other buildings they work with.

The palace itself was named after Maharaja Umaid Singh, who was the grandfather of the current owner of the palace, Gaj Singh (as of Feburary 2021). Planning for the palace started all the way back on Numberber 18th, 1929, and the workman didn’t hang around. The building was then completed in 1943.

As of 2016, the Palace won the World’s Best Hotel, as awarded by the Traveller’s Choice Awards.

Reason to Visit the Umaid Bhawan Palace

As you read above, the Umaid Bhawan Palace was awarded the world’s best hotel award, so if that’s not a reason to visit it yourself, then I don’t know what is. The palace and its ground are next level; you’ll get to enjoy the stunning sandstone building that literally is full of rooms that were designed for royalty.

There are swimming pools, lounge areas, bars, plenty of grounds to walk around, and exceptional 9.6/10 reviews on top hotel booking websites, like TripAdvisor and Booking.com. However, you might want to think about saving up since a three-night stay is probably going to set you back around $1,500, depending on which time of the year you go.

It’s worth noting that only a wing of the palace is actually open as a hotel. In the other spaces, you’ll find stunning architecture that has captured the times over the years, including Western Deco styles, and an expansive museum you’ll be able to explore. There’s also a range of beautiful classic cars out front for you to drop your jaw too.

What’s more, you’ll be in Jodhpur, which is known for being one of the most culturally diverse places in India, and there’s so much to see and do, you’re not going to know where you’ll want to begin!
